Brushwood Stable’s Mushka took the lead from front-running Zaskar on the far turn and galloped home a 1¼-length winner in the 14th running of the Grade 3, $110,500 Glens Falls Stakes on closing day at Saratoga Race Course. The 4-year-old daughter of Empire Maker, ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux, let Zaskar open up by as many as nine lengths in the 1 3/8th mile marathon on the turf, and then began cutting into her lead with a half-mile to go. Taking over as the field of 10 fillies and mares straightened for home, Mushka had plenty left to turn back the late challenges from Lemonette and Queen of Hearts, completing the 11-furlong race in 2:13.50 over the firm turf course. “Everything went according to plan after the break,” said Desormeaux. “The distance was fine for her. She was full of run. I can’t do it without an eager mount; and my mount was eager.” Sent off as the lukewarm 5-2 favorite, Mushka returned $7.40 for a $2 win bet as she earned $66,300. The victory was her first since taking an allowance at Keeneland in April, and extended her lifetime record to 5-2-3 from 15 starts. "She was on the bridle and traveling really well,” said her Hall of Fame trainer, Bill Mott, who also won the race in 1999 with Idle Rich. “Kent said when she turned the corner, she did it all on her own and opened up.” Lemonette nosed out Queen of Hearts for second, with Caprice, Bubbly Jane, Astrologie, Tejida, Avie’s Tale, Communique, and Zaskar completing the order of finish. Winter View and Shake the Moon were scratched. |
