The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host its third “New Owners Luncheon” on “New York Showcase Day,” Saturday, October 22 at Belmont Park. Initiated at Belmont this spring and continued in Saratoga, the program provides a comprehensive introduction to thoroughbred ownership in an effort to bring new owners to the sport of horseracing.

The day-long event will begin at 8 a.m. with breakfast in the Turf & Field room followed by a presentation and Q&A session from a panel of racing experts including trainers Todd Pletcher, Rick Violette and Rick Schosberg, owners Mike Repole and Michael Dubb, as well as a variety of representatives who are well-versed in the business of thoroughbred ownership and partnerships, including William DiScala, head of Karakorum Racing, Donald Little, president of Centennial Farms, insurance agent/broker Michael Lischin, accountant Anthony Ferrera. Lewis Kobel from NYRA horsemen’s credentials will also be on hand to answer questions about owners’ credentials at Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga.

The event will be hosted by former jockey and current NYRA television analyst Richard Migliore and emceed by NYRA consultant and co-host Thomas Gallo.

“With the large increase in purses scheduled to start January 1 at the upcoming 2012 Aqueduct meet, it’s never been a better time to explore horse ownership,” Gallo said. “We are looking forward to another great ‘New Owners Luncheon’ on what will be a tremendous day of racing that will feature seven New York-bred stakes.”

In addition to the in-depth discussions on horse ownership, guests will receive a barn tour, visit to the saddling area prior to the races, have the opportunity to meet New York’s leading jockeys, trainers, and owners throughout the day, and participate in a winner’s circle trophy presentation.

Registration will be limited to 40 attendees with a registration fee of $60, which includes a continental breakfast and full lunch in the Turf & Field room, all the activities described above, a daily racing program, as well as prizes and giveaways.

Migliore, who began riding in 1980 and a year later won the Eclipse Award as the nation’s top apprentice, retired in 2010 after winning 4,450 races, including 362 stakes. Twice the leading rider in New York, “The Mig” currently serves as a NYRA racing office associate in addition to his role as a broadcast analyst.

Thomas J. Gallo, best known as managing owner of Parting Glass Racing horse partnerships, has more than 35 years in the thoroughbred horse industry and has dedicated much of his career to bringing new owners to the racing game. When considering Gallo for this initiative, NYRA appreciated the PGR business model including its regular interaction with owners through monthly meetings where NYRA officials and many other industry notables make guest appearances. Also considered was Gallo’s long-term relationship with Migliore, who has been a guest speaker at many PGR meetings and NYRA events, where they jointly encouraged fans to get into the racing game through ownership.
