Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said West Point Thoroughbreds’ multiple graded-stakes winner Justwhistledixie, second in the Grade 1 Acorn in her last start, would not be running against Rachel Alexandra in Saturday’s Grade 1, $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park.

“We’re going to point her toward the Test (Grade 1, seven furlongs, Saturday, Aug. 8, Saratoga) instead,” he said. “We just decided it’s back a little quick for us.”

McLaughlin said that Stewart Armstrong’s Dream Play, winner of the Dearly Precious and the Grade 2 Comely, was questionable for Saturday’s race.

Alan Brodsky’s Don’t Forget Gil, Godolphin Stables’ Flashing and Edward P. Evans’ Malibu Prayer are the remaining likely starters for the nine-furlong Mother Goose.

At Churchill Downs Monday morning, Rachel Alexandra worked a half-mile in 49.80 as she prepared for Saturday’s Grade 1, $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park, her first start since beating Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and 11 other males in the May 16 Preakness Stakes.

Exercise rider Dominic Terry was in the saddle as the 3-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro covered the distance over a “fast” track in fractional times of 13, 25 and 37.40, galloping out five furlongs in 1:03.40.

“The filly went beautiful this morning,” said trainer Steve Asmussen. “She looked very happy. Scott (assistant trainer Scott Blasi) and Dominic have done a great job keeping her happy.”

Rachel Alexandra is scheduled to arrive at Belmont Park late Tuesday afternoon from Churchill Downs as she puts her six-race winning streak on the line in Saturday’s nine-furlong Mother Goose. She will be accompanied by Blasi on the flight from Louisville, Ky., and will be bedded down at trainer Steve Asmussen’s barn in stall No. 5, the same stall occupied by two-time Horse of the Year Curlin.

Godolphin Stable’s Cocoa Beach was no worse for the wear Monday morning after having finished fourth as the prohibitive favorite in Sunday’s $65,000 Heatherten Stakes for fillies and mares.

“She seems to be fine, scoped clear, and ate up her breakfast,” said Rick Mettee, North American racing manager for Godolphin and assistant to head trainer Saeed bin Suroor. “Maybe she needed the race. Ramon [Dominguez] had breezed her the previous week in the mud and said she seemed to be fit enough. She got keen going into a slow pace, which probably didn’t help, and Ramon said she knew she was beat midway through the turn. She was tired.”

Mettee added that the 5-year-old mare would likely make her next start at Saratoga in a Grade 1 race.

“There’s the Go For Wand ($300,000, nine furlongs, Sunday, Aug. 2) and the Diana ($500,000, nine furlongs, turf, Saturday Aug. 1) and the Personal Ensign ($400,000, 1 ¼ miles, Sunday, Aug 30),” he said.

Flashing, who breezed five furlongs in a brisk 59.55 on the main track on Saturday, continues to do “especially well” as she prepares for the Mother Goose, said Mettee.

Mettee added that two of Godolphin’s top 3-year-olds, 2008 Juvenile Champion and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Midshipman, and Vineyard Haven, winner of the Grade 1 Three Chimneys Hopeful at Saratoga Race Course and the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park, were both doing well after having spent the early part of the year in Dubai.

“Vineyard Haven is galloping away,” said Mettee of the colt, who was fourth to Desert Party in his only start this year in the UAE 2000 Guineas in February. “He probably should have breezed by now, but the weather is holding things up.”

Midshipman, the son of Unbridled’s Song who was taken off the Triple Crown trail in early March because of a tendon injury to his left front leg, is further behind, said Mettee.

“He’s been jogging and is ready to start galloping,” he said.

No timetable has been set for their return to racing.

Grade 1 Acorn winner Gabby’s Golden Gal was “doing great” Monday after firing a bullet work Saturday morning, drilling four furlongs in 47.10 over the fast main track.

“I don’t know exactly what Bob (Baffert) has planned for her, but the thinking is either the Prioress (Grade 1, $300,000, six furlongs, July 4, Belmont Park) or the Test (Grade 1, seven furlongs, Saturday, Aug. 8, Saratoga Race Course),” said John Terranova, who with his wife, Tonja, oversees Baffert’s New York-based horses. “I would say the Prioress is likely.”
