The BUSHER Handicap is named for Louis B. Mayer`s remarkable filly and 1945 Horse of the Year. As a two year old, Busher carried the colors of her breeder, Colonel E. R. Bradley`s Idle Hour Stock Farm, and was trained by J. W. Smith. In seven starts she won five races including the Adirondack Handicap, Matron, and Selima Stakes. She was named champion two year old filly of 1944. During the wartime suspension of racing in 1945, Busher was sold to L. B. Mayer for a reported $50,000. After racing resumed, Busher started 13 times and was never out of the money, winning 10 starts.
Against her own gender, she posted victories in the Santa Susana, Santa Margarita, Cleopatra Handicap, and a match race with Durazna. Against males, she was victorious in the Hollywood Derby, San Vicente, Arlington, and Washington Park Handicap.
Run at one mile in 1978 and 1979; at a mile and an eighth from 1985 through 1992; not run in 1986 and 1987.
